Exercising Safely in the Night - Some Tips

Exercise and a balanced nutritional diet are two things that are extremely important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In today's hectic and stressful environment, some people find it very difficult to accommodate a workout regime in their schedule until late at night. Working out at night is possible both indoors and outdoors. However, if you like exercising outdoors, there are some safety issues that you need to bear in mind and plan accordingly. Safety Aspects to Consider Before Venturing Outdoors in the Night
• Do not venture out alone. Exercising in a group is fun and safe.

• Figure out the route that you will be taking in advance. Keep a family member or a friend informed about this route and let them know the approximate time as to when you shall be back. Also if possible, keep changing your route regularly.

• Avoid wearing loud jewelry and carry minimum amount of cash. This will reduce the risk of you falling prey to robbery.

• Do not go to unknown and sparsely populated areas. Make sure that you are familiar with the route that you choose and that the streets are well lit.

• If you sense that an attacker or a robber is following you, immediately change your route and reach to the safety of your home as fast as you can.

• Ensure that you carry with you some sort of identification proof. In fact, carry a card that has details like your name, phone number and important medical information on it.

• If you prefer listening to music during your workout, make sure that the volume is not too high; else you will not be able to hear an approaching car or an attacker.

• Do not wear dull coloured clothes. Your clothes should be bright enough so that motorists can see you in the dark. Wear jogging shoes that have in built reflectors in them.

• Make sure that your cell phone is reachable at all times. It is a good idea to keep a note of the public booths that you come across on your route in case your cell phone is lost or runs out of battery.

• Always be alert to your surroundings. Immediately call the police if you see any unusual activity.

• It is also important to protect yourself during the cold weather. Make sure you wear appropriate warm clothing. Protect the exposed parts of your body like hands, feet and face, so as to avoid frostbites.

Indoor Exercising Options
If you prefer exercising indoors at night, and if you are willing to spend that extra buck for the sake of your fitness, you can rope in a personal trainer. Make sure that you notify him about your workout timings in advance, so that he can chalk out a suitable plan for you. Most of the gymnasiums are open until late at night. If you prefer working out at the gymnasium, you can ask your personal trainer to accompany you there; else you can exercise in the comforts of your home.
